Quite an excellent game with a potentially very high buzz factor.Required materials: many people and at least two decks of cards. A goodrule of thumb is one deck for six people, than an additional deck forevery additional eight to ten people.

Everyone sits in a circle, one player is the dealer as wellas a participant. Each player is dealt four cards face up, to be keptin front of that player.

Each successive hand is played with one card fewer, down to a hand of just one card each, then one card more per hand back up to the starting level. Example: With 7 players, the hands are: 7 cards, then 6,5,4,3,2,1, then 2,3,4,5,6,7, for a total of 13 hands to the game. The betting round takes place with the same rules as in earlier betting rounds. The difference here is what happens next. If the river is checked, the hands are turned face up and the pot is awarded to the player with best 5 card hand. If a bet is made on the river and nobody calls, the pot is now over and awarded to whoever placed the bet.

The dealer then starts 'up the river' by turning over the first card, each player with the same card in front of him/her (suit doesn't matter),must take one drink. If the person has more than one of the same card,it is a drink for each card.

The dealer then turns over the next card. Same thing, except thistime it is two drinks. The next deal is three drinks, and the the last isfour drinks.

The river is the last chance for players to bet, raise or fold. After the betting on the turn has been completed, the dealer will place another single card face up by the side of the turn card. Now the final round of betting begins, as before in both the flop and turn stages of the game the betting (or indeed checking) are started by the player.

After the fourth card, the dealer returns 'down the river' by dealingthe next card on top of the fourth card dealt. Players with matchingcards now GIVE four drinks away in any combination; four to one player,or maybe one drink to four different players. Same situation of theplayer has more than one of the same card; the player gives drinks foreach card.

The dealer continues back 'down the river' by dealing the nextcard on top of the third card dealt. This time players give three cardsfor each matching card. The next deal is a give of two drinks, and thelast deal is a give of one drink.

After all the cards are dealt, simply shuffle and deal again.Lastly, the dealer starts turning over cards, while counting from 1 (ace)to 13 (king), if the count and the card turned over are equal in valuethen all players drink that many drinks. Play continues until everyoneis sick of the game, or sick from the beer.

INTRODUCTION TO UP AND DOWN THE RIVER

Down The River Poker Rules 2019

Up and Down the River is another name for the trick-taking card game Oh Hell!It also refers to a communal drinking game which is described below.

HOW TO PLAY

  1. Players sit in a circle and pick a dealer, the dealer also participates in the game.
  2. The dealer deals each player four cards, face-up. Cards are kept in front of each player.
  3. The dealer keeps the remainder of the deck. The dealer starts the game by flipping over the top card of the deck. This is going ‘up the river.’ If a player has a card of the same rank, they must take a drink. Suit does not matter. If a person has more than one card in hand that matches they must take a drink per matching card.
  4. The dealer flips over the next card. The same rules repeat, except if a player has a matching card they take two drinks… then three.. then four.
  5. After the fourth card is flipped, the dealer begins to move ‘down the river,’ by flipping a single card ontop of the fourth. Players who have matching cards give four drinks away to other players in any combination. Four drinks to one player, two to two players, etc. Players give drinks per matching card.
  6. The dealer continues on going down the river by dealing another card, in which players must give three drinks if they have a matching card. This continues until players give only one drink.
  7. At the end of the game, the cards are collected by the dealer and shuffled thoroughly.
  8. The dealer counts, starting from 1 to 13, where Ace=1 and King=13. The dealer flips over cards while counting. If the rank of the card matches the number the dealer announces, everyone must take that number of drinks.
  9. Cards are reshuffled and re-dealt. Play the game until players are sick of the game or sick off the booze.
