He travels across the US for work, so we visit many casinos. I was worried due to the poor reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. Yes, a couple of the areas are smoky especially upstairs. We won and lost as much money as usual (we don't play cards).

The Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort is located in New Cumberland. It is one of five West Virginia casinos.

The Mountaineer is in the farthest northern outpost of West Virginia. The property sits on the eastern bank of the Ohio River, which forms the border between West Virginia and Ohio.

Oddly enough, despite the casino’s location, its closest large city is Pittsburgh. The city in western Pennsylvania is merely 45 miles east of the property.

Gaming company Eldorado Resorts owns the Mountaineer. The company owns 21 properties, but this is its only West Virginia one. Eldorado Resorts also has a partnership with sports betting giant William Hill Sportsbook.

Mountaineer sports betting

On Oct. 22, The Mountaineer applied for a sports betting license. The casino officially launched sports betting on Nov. 21. Its William Hill Sports Book features a video wall showcasing numerous games, HD televisions and plenty of seating.

The Mountaineer marks three of five WV casinos with sports betting licenses that have actually launched betting. WV Lottery officials have stated several times that they expect functional sportsbooks at all five casinos before 2018 ends.

The launch was the fourth for mobile sports betting in West Virginia. The app is available for both Android and Apple (iOS) users.

Casino and racetrack

The Mountaineer is not a small operation, considering its location. Even though Pittsburgh is less than an hour away, the casino is competing with some of the closer options to Steel City.

Racing

Like most West Virginia casinos, Mountaineer features a horse racing track that has live racing year-round. West Virginia online horse betting takes place on at TVG, as William Hill, the online sportsbook partnered with Mountaineer does not offer racing.

The signature event at the track is the grade-3 $200,000 Governor’s Purse. The event runs in early August each year.

The Mountaineer’s track is a turf surface, which is unusual for most tracks in the area — most are dirt tracks. However, the track’s handle was over $1 million last year, making the track a destination for many racing aficionados.

History of Mountaineer Casino

The property has contributed its own part of US gambling history. Planning for a racetrack up in Chester can be traced all the way back to 1937 and was to be called Waterford Downs. While the public offering was approved in 1939, but because of several unfortunate events (including World War II), it was delayed until 1948.

Opening day for the racetrack known as Waterford Park wouldn’t occur until 1951.

James F. Edwards bought the track in the mid-1950s and in 1969, Ogden Corporation bought Edwards’ holdings.

In 1987, Bill Blair purchased the track and renamed it Mountaineer Park before selling to Excalibur Holding in 1992. In 1994, the track incorporated its first slot machines. Table gaming was added in 2007.

In 2019, the casino was sold to Century Casinos and Vici Properties, with Century taking the operating business and Vici taking the land and buildings while entering a leasing agreement with Century.

Now that you know a little background on the casino, let’s look at what this jewel in New Cumberland has to offer.
